Custom Plaques by Tymely Designs

Happy Monday, Moms!

I am in the middle of a sewing marathon (literally), but wanted to quickly share crafty mom Gwen's shop with you. Gwen is the owner of Tymely Designs and she has a website and a new Etsy shop.

Gwen is way beyond "crafty" in my book because she also does all the sawing, sanding, routing and painting on her custom wood plaques. Her pieces literally start as a block of wood and when she is finished, look what she can create for you:

Gwen crafts wooden signs for weddings, births, families, homes and holidays. She has designed an entire wooden sign monogram collection which I am particularly fond of too.

Visit Gwen today and get started on your holiday shopping. You will love her quality and workmanship, from start to finish.

Worst Working Mom Moments

Sorry I've been away this week, Moms!

My four-year-old daughter fell at one of those inflatable play jumps places. Actually, she was jumping and bounced over the wall and fell directly on her collar bone. She has a broken collar bone and I thank God every day it is not a severe neck injury with the way she fell. She was with her grandparents for a fun day out...now she is in an arm/shoulder sling for six weeks. When I told one of my best friends from college about this (she is a pediatric doctor), she immediately said, "Yes, those things are SO dangerous!" So please be aware and make sure your kids are not bouncing close to the walls or the edge of the open inflatable slides, bouncers, etc. It can happen so fast.

After not being there when she fell, I received this feature from Mommy Track'd in my inbox. It was exactly what I needed. You know how sometimes you feel like a terrible parent when you are so busy with your business? Well, you are not alone. Check out these "Worst Working Mom Moments" here:

http://www.mommytrackd.com/moments

On another note, my husband has started a new job in Birmingham, Alabama and we will be selling our home here in Nashville and moving in the next few months. I have closed my business to new orders until November 1st as I sew all day long (literally) to ship out my current waiting list of orders.

Look for a few guest bloggers coming up and please drop me a line at polkadotmom@gmail.com if you would like to write an article or feature that our readers would enjoy!

Help with "What's for Dinner?"

Leigh over at Your Home Based Mom must know that the "What's for dinner?" question throws me into a tailspin every evening. My usual answer is, "I have no idea!"

After working all day from home sewing and shipping orders, I should have PLENTY of time to think about what our family is having for dinner, right?! Um, no.

Leigh to the rescue!

She is walking us through an easy way to plan our family meals each week. Hooray!
The lessons start here: "Help! What's for Dinner?" Part One

Leigh is a working wife and mom of four kids. I subscribe to her blog for her inspiring articles and amazing (and practical) recipes.

This course is easy to read and filled with ideas that work. Leigh is a woman you can trust. She is honest and has a great sense of humor. That is why I am sharing her with you. Be sure to subscribe to her blog so you don't miss a moment of this course and her many recipes and posts.

Will you join me? I'm going to give it the old college try. Plan my family's dinner meals for at least one week. Just try it. Hey, maybe it will work and make my hungry husband and picky-eating daughters happy too.

Happy meal planning!

Monday Moms - Ribbons!

I love ribbons. One of my favorite places to buy ribbons is from Lisa at Crafter's Vision. Sometimes I cannot resist the ribbon sales at Hobby Lobby. I always stroll down the ribbon aisle at JoAnn's. I have spools and spools of ribbon hanging above my work table. My girls always have a ribbon in their hair. My gifts are always tied with a real ribbon. What can I say? I love ribbon! Tell me I'm not the only one....

Carol at Little Bow Peep Tails has the cutest polka dot Halloween ribbon streamers and bows for little girls! Handmade and hand-sewn upon your order, these hair bows are special.

Always a favorite, Carols designs and TOP quality will make you a repeat customer for sure!

Christy at Bella Joys is hosting a huge 60% off ribbon spools sale! Lots of colors, dots, solids and patterns are on reduced for their moving sale. It won't last long - act fast!

I just couldn't resist bringing you even MORE polka dot Halloween goodies handmade by moms in businesss. There are so many cute things for your little pumpkins!

First, the gorgeous couture-inspired boutique Halloween dots dress pictured above is made by Bridget & Co. and I fell in love at first sight. The belt, bow and pumpkin did me in (not to mention the beautiful black polka dot fabric!).

Believe it or not, owner Bridget is a working mom with SIX children, age 17 years to age 2 years. She has five boys and one girl. See more of her dresses for girls at http://bridgetandco.etsy.com/.

Leave it to our friend and veteran Polka Dot Mom, Amy, to create an entire line of polka dot Halloween gift bag tags, now available in her shop.

Perfect for your school Halloween parties or for making your own favor bags for your teachers or neighbors, Amy sells these gorgeous glittery tags in small sets for great prices.

She is super to work with too! See more of her Halloween collection at http://amyelisedesigns.etsy.com/.

Someone I know pretty well who owns Polka Dot Market (me?!) has bucket-style Halloween treat bags in stock now.

I love Halloween because it is the only time of year I get to sew orange and black polka dots all day long. I love it!

This year we have this new bucket bag in a girl's design and a boy's design to suit their candy-grabbing-pleasure.

See all of our personalized Halloween bags for kids at http://polkadotmarket.etsy.com/.

Our friend Kim from Sugar Chic Baby sent us a link to her limited edition handmade felt Halloween cookies .

Each set includes four cookies. See more photos and more play felt food handmade by Kim at http://sugarchicbaby.etsy.com/.

Carabella's Knows Personalized Gifts

Don't you just love this Babylicious hooded bath towel from Carabella's pink and green polka dot baby gift collection?

When you need a really cute baby gift, head on over to see crafty mom Jeni at http://www.carabellas.net/. She has an AMAZING selection of gifts for everyone on your list and she personalizes nearly every item herself, "tailor made just for you" with your name, monogram or initials.

Jeni is a busy working wife and mom to three kids. When she was pregnant with her second child, she and her husband wanted to prepare their son for having a sibling so they told him he was going to have a sister named Cara. Soon after Cara was born, her two-year-old big brother started calling her "Carabella" and the rest is history! Jeni loves her kids and the ability to be home with them and she writes, "I love, love, love my job!!"

In addition to her three children, Jeni and her husband are in the process of adopting a son from El Salvador. She started Carabella’s as a way to earn extra income to help defer the high costs involved with adoption. Jeni writes, "With God’s help and my customer's loyal support, we have grown into a small business that makes and ships unique gifts all over the country!"

The favorite part of her business is making beautiful gifts for people. Her highest compliment is when her customers tell her that she makes THEM great gift-givers! Many of her clients are repeat customers who trust Jeni to make ALL of their baby gifts.

For baby boys, check out the bold blue dots bibs, burps and blankets by Babylicious and monogrammed by Jeni too!

See you over at http://www.carabellas.net/!

Vote for Polka Dot Moms

There is a Handmade Kids Sweepstakes going on through September 8th on Etsy!

Two of our Polka Dot Moms have made the final cut and you can vote for them today. When you vote, you are entered to win one of fourteen $350 shopping sprees on Etsy.

There are seven contest categories under the heading "Handmade Kids....":

  • Furniture
  • Toys
  • Home Decor
  • Eco-Friendly
  • Clothing
  • Accessories
  • Art

See all of the winning entries here. Two Polka Dot Moms are featured in the sweepstakes, Holy Craft and Lil B Designs. I have already placed my vote!

These custom "vintage" baby blocks are made by Abby of Holy Craft. She lives in western Michigan with her husband, Kyle, and is a stay-at-home mom to two "crazy kids", Ashlyn (3) and Maguire (1). Abby enjoys taking bike rides with her family, reading, singing, her couples ministry at church, playing and laughing with her kids and drinking coffee or Diet Dr. Pepper. She admits she spends way too much time online (don't we all?)!

Abby writes, "As long as I can remember, I've been crafty and trying to sell my products. It all started 20+ years ago with my first "business"...my best friend and I started Wedgewood's Woodworks! We made things out of popsicle sticks and set up shop at the end of our driveways (we lived on Wedgewood Drive)."

Her winning entry are her Amy Butler paper custom baby blocks. See more in her Etsy shop at http://holycraft.etsy.com/.

You can see all of the items in Abby's category and for for her here:
http://www.etsy.com/voter_list.php?room_id=16

Another contest category features one of our VERY FIRST Polka Dot Moms, Rachel of Lil B Designs. Her Roll-n-Go™ crayon keepers are fabulous and each includes 8 crayons free!

Rachel writes, "Keep your crayons in a row for on-the-go fun for your little one in restaurants, on planes, in the car, doctor's offices, or anywhere you travel. Say good-bye to searching for floating crayons in the bottom of your bag or messy crayon clutter. Each rolls up compactly and fastens securely with the grosgrain ribbon tie. Keep it handy in your purse, diaper bag, in the car, or your child's bag of goodies. It's a simple way to offer your child instant entertainment on the go! Each Roll-n-Go™ holds 16 regular or 8 big crayons.

See more of Rachel's designs at http://lilbdesigns.etsy.com/ or vote for her Roll-n-Go™ here:

Crafty Mom Nie Nie Recovery Fund

I cannot remember how I first came across this story, but it was a few days ago and I have been reading and re-reading her blog and her sister's blog over and over again. It is a story that will make you laugh and cry in the same breath. It has been on my mind and I know you will want to add this family to your prayer list too. Many bloggers, including Design Mom, are already on board and auctioning off amazing things to benefit this couple's recovery and four children.

If you choose to read Stephanie's blog (Nie Nie) or her sister's blog, you will find a young, happy mom who loves her husband, her four kids, crafts, beauty, decorating, yoga, her friends and her family. Her husband, Christian, is a certified pilot and loves to fly almost as much as he loves his wife and his family.

On Saturday, August 16, 2008, Stephanie Nielson was in a serious plane crash with her husband, Christian Nielson, and his flight instructor, Doug Kinnear, near St. Johns, Arizona. Doug Kinnear passed away soon after arriving at the Maricopa County Hospital.

Christian & Stephanie remain in critical condition at Maricopa Burn Center. Christian has sustained burns on over 30% of his body. His wife Stephanie’s body was burned over 80%.

For the past four years, Stephanie has welcomed us into her charming abode through the NieNie Dialogues. Far from being a product of creative editing, the Nielson’s don’t just shine through the selective lens of a blog. They are ingenuous examples of family devotion, eternal romance, and Christ centered faith. The Nie Nie Recovery site is dedicated to their welfare & recovery.

As you read her blog, you will see beautiful examples of how she cared for her family. Through simple crafts or elaborate princess crowns for her girls or model airport runways (with Christmas lights!) for her sons. This is one amazing mom, and I know she would give anything to be hugging her kids right now. Please remember this family as you go through your busy days. I have never met her and she has already taught me so much. If you feel inclined to create an Etsy listing to donate to their recovery or to make a direct donation via PayPal (click the Donate button at the top of the page), I thank you.

I am happy to post links to your silent auctions or Etsy listings on behalf of this recovery effort, please send information to me at polkadotmom@gmail.com.

Thanks for letting me share....
